Where do you see yourself in 3-5 years? What do you want in your next position? What are your short-term goals? Often, these are dreaded questions in the interview process – who can say where they will be in 3-5 years? Look back five years ago and honestly tell me you saw yourself in your current situation in life in Oct. 2007?
In a 2009 EMC publication, many Fortune 500 recruiters noted having clear short-term career goals were a top career search strategy to employ. Knowing what you want in your next step and why you want it sends a powerful message to the hiring manager – you have thought about the position, industry, and next steps in your career. The hiring manager will look across her desk and see a motivated employee who has direction as opposed to someone who is drifting and looking for stability in order to ride out the storms of a bad economy.
Before your next interview or networking meeting, think about what you want and why you want it – you may see a difference in how others perceive your candidacy.
