Absence of Clearly Defined Goals

“In the absence of clearly-defined goals, we become strangely loyal to performing daily trivia until ultimately we become enslaved by it.”
― Robert A. Heinlein

Heard this quote on the radio while driving the other day and it hit home.  The host of the radio show challenged listeners to think of what ‘daily trivia’ currently exists in our lives and to which we have become enslaved.  Never miss a certain television show?  Constantly checking email or a favorite internet site?  Find yourself comparing your house, income, cars, etc. with your friends?  Getting upset at something you have no control over and is not a big deal? What are your ‘daily trivia’ that prevent you from focusing on larger goals in your life?

And since my blog focuses on career-centered topics, I jump to what ‘daily trivia’ is in my life that prevents me from being the best employee I can be?  What are things I am doing/not doing that holds me back from the next level, promotion, job?  Identify the daily trivia in your life and eliminate in order to free yourself from becoming the person you are trying to be.

Just wanted to share the quote as it caused me to pause and think and I hope it will for you.
